Polish volleyball fans are waking up to a fairytale result this morning, after the FIVB World Volleyball Championship title was scooped-up by Poland on the team’s home turf. Despite a rather rocky start to last night’s game against defending champions Brazil, Poland fought back from one set down to outclass their opponents 3-1.
Over 12,000 fans made their way to the Spodek Arena while tens of thousands more packed the country’s fan-zones. Wallace de Souza and Ricardo Lucarelli were their characteristically unstoppable selves, but weren’t able to ward off Mateusz Mika and Mariusz Wlazly who led the charge for Poland.
It’s been exactly 40 years since Poland last lifted the title – to do so on home turf was and is a dream come true.
