Rory McIlroy has gone on record to state that taking home the Ryder Cup would be the ‘icing on the cake’ for his already awesome 2014. The current world number-one has already managed to scoop up four major tournaments in as many months, including the US PGA Championship and The Open.
He’s back at Gleneagles this week and hoping for a pretty sweet sign off to what he admits has been a ‘fantastic’ year.
“Personally for me it would just be the icing on the cake of what’s already a fantastic year,” he said.
“It feels like everyone involved is just so passionate about it and even the public get so much more passionate about it than the Majors or individual tourneys,”
“So it’s great to be a part of; I’ve been a part of two winning European teams and would love to make that a third this week,”
“I’m gonna have to be one of the leaders and be expected to lead by example. That’s a big responsibility but one I want to try to handle and try to get a few points on the board early for the team,”
“It’s way better to win as part of a team. The best experiences in my golf career have been the Ryder Cup and to be able to celebrate with all these guys. It’s very special.”
McIlroy made a quite incredible comeback this year after suffering a particularly disappointing 2013 during which he fell to 11th in the world rankings.
