It’s a mixed bag of news for the dedicated Samsung aficionado this week, so brace yourself for the good and the not so good.
Kicking off with the downer, there’s reason to believe that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will neither launch nor make its first appearance and Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month. Tragic stuff indeed, but if Samsung’s press invited for its February 23 event is anything to go by, there’s no mention of anything S5 related or even a hint.
As for the good news, we may instead be granted out first official introduction to Samsung’s Tizen operating system – a new in-house venture that could give the likes of Android a run for its money.
Here’s how they put it in their own words:
“Please join the Tizen Association Board on Sunday, 23 February 2014 for a welcome reception and kick-off to MWC 2014. During this invite only event, you will get an exclusive sneak preview of the newest Tizen devices as well as an opportunity to learn about the major milestones that the Tizen project has hit since last year’s event,”
“We ask you to reserve time from 3-6 PM CET on 23 February 2014 at Hotel ARTS Barcelona where you will also have the opportunity to hear from and interview Tizen Association Board Members.”
If this is the first you’re hearing of Tizen, what you’re looking at is a Samsung-built mobile operating system that was supposed to hit the market toward the middle of last year…something that didn’t happen. Then, the first Tizen-powered device was supposed to arrive sometime during January this year, which again didn’t happen.
The next we heard was a statement suggesting Tizen had been shelved for the time being at least, but Samsung’s official press invite seems to suggest otherwise. As of Feb 23 – which just so happens to be a day before MWC 2014 kicks off – we’ll know what Tizen’s all about and which devices will be debuting it.
And just to round-off with a particularly compelling rumor from the mill – some have suggested that the first Tizen Smartphone will in fact be the very device we’ve all come to call the Samsung Galaxy S5.
Stranger things have happened….
